One Big Ice Kachang

Got through the first winter storm! Yay! The snow's still around, all over. But there's definitely less anxiety today compared to yesterday. I got out of my apartment yesterday around noon to go to the office, as suggested by my colleagues here. The ground was messy, really messy. Where I was, the snow had been trodden over and was brown, wet and slippery. So slippery that a huge dog that someone ahead of me was walking nearly fell! In some other parts, there were just huge blocks of ice lying around, beginning to melt. Everywhere, it was one big ice kachang, without the beans or coloured syrup :-p

I waited longer than usual for Bus #3 to get to work, but was happy enough standing at the side with a super-hot maple latte, avoiding the ice that occasionally fell from the ledges above. I heard on the news and from people that there were quite a few accidents on the road - everyone having to get used to the road conditions with snow, wind and rain. No doubt stress levels were higher, since people were more nervous.

It was so white everywhere that the radio stations began playing Christmas music! How funny is that?! But it's true, it was very pretty in some parts. Have a look at the scene at around the 111 Sussex campus, which is just by the Rideau River:

I saw snow weighing the trees down, and tried to get some pictures in the middle of -10 deg C wind. It was silly of me - my fingers were frozen within 5 seconds! Took a while to thaw and stung a bit, but at least I got the shots I wanted ;-) And I literally got blown home when I turned the corner at the street to my apartment - the wind was so strong and in the right direction (thankfully), that I was swept down the lane towards the front door! Yikes! I hope that doesn't happen too often. Perhaps I should invest in some winter boots with heavy duty spikes...
